The future, in the case of compact cameras is somewhat predictable.
Let’s try and deduce from the past, what to expect in the near future.
The Past as a mirror of the Future
The compact camera yearly timeline has several deep marks on it. All large camera companies have two or three set dates in which they announce new models. This makes it easy to foresee what’s around the corner.
January and February of 2010 gave us 8 new Canon PowerShots, 13 new FujiFilm Finepix’s, 8 new Nikon Coolpix’s, 13 new Panasonic Lumix’s, 12 new Sony Cyber-shots and 8 new Olympus cameras.
In 2011, 10 new Canon PowerShots, 16 new FujiFilm FinePix’s, 8 new Nikon Coolpix’s, 12 new Panasonic Lumix’s, 13 new Sony Cyber-shots and 9 new Olympus cameras were announced on January and February.
What have we got…
So far, FujiFilm was the only company to fill their beginning-of-the-year quota, with no less than 17 new FinePix cameras announced.
It’s the time of the Compact Zooms
The most interesting models coming just around the corner are the replacements for the compact zooms – the Canon PowerShot SX230, the Sony Cyber-shot HX9V, the Nikon Coolpix S9100 and the Panasonic Lumix ZS10.
These models, like all their predecessors, have been announced at this time of the year, so we can expect a PowerShot SX240, a Cyber-shot HX10V, a Coolpix S9200 and a Lumix ZS12 in a few weeks at the most.
The Cyber-shot HX9V has already been mostly out of stock in recent weeks (as well as the HX100V), creating an eager anticipation for the HX10V to be announced.
The ZS10 and the ZS7 a year before, were announced on January 25th/26th of 2011 and 2010, so the ZS12, if that’s its name, is the first we should be waiting for.
The SX230, as the SX210 a year before, was announced on February 7th.
The HX9V was announced on February 1st and the Coolpix S9100 was announced on February 9th.
You see what this means, right?
Forecast for February – Rain!
We are about to be flooded. I foresee a tsunami of compact cameras coming our way. Fuji gave us a taste of what’s coming and the rest are sure to follow. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
As always, I’ll update when I hear anything, so stay tuned.

Update (February 28th, 2012): With a single day to spare for not spoiling my premonition, Sony released nine new Cyber-shots, including the x16 zoom HX10V, the x20 zoom HX20V and (wi-fi enabled) HX30V and the mighty x30 zoom HX200V, replacing the HX100V.
