A valued supplement to the broadening niche of high quality ultras, the WX5 is small, fast and smart, even when the sun goes down.

Sony's approach to manufacturing digital compact cameras is to create point and shoots that will justify their name. Being smart enough to identify any possible scene and to employ whatever necessary tools to cope with all focusing, exposing, noise-reducing or blur-avoiding needs.

The WX5 is one of their latest and most equipped examples. Encased in a slim ultra compact body, it features a powerful imaging sensor and a wide maximum aperture, providing support for low light situations. Among its long list of features, high resolution video, a wide angle lens, 3D imaging and 3D sweep panorama, automatic multi exposed single image,

The WX5 is Sony's latest attempt to create a super automatic camera, providing an abundance of features aimed to enhance image quality in every situation. Its imaging sensor, wide maximum aperture, multiple exposure capability and various shooting modes all combine forces to that purpose.

In further detail, the imaging sensor (back illuminated CMOS) is used together with a wide f/2.4 aperture to gather as much light as possible when lights are low. When necessary, a fast sequence of photos are automatically taken in order to create a single, better looking image.

Other than that, it includes an extra wide 24mm lens, allowing expansive scenes to be captured in a single frame. Its Video is high 1080i resolution with Dolby stereo sound and enabled optical zoom (unlike some other new cameras). In its fast burst mode 10 full resolution photos can be taken within a single second.

In order to squeeze all those features mentioned above, along with a wide maximum aperture, into a slim 22mm thick body, the first and foremost compromise it the zoom range. Even though x5 is enough for most situations, some may feel it leaves a lot to be desired.
As a camera designed to automate every possible focusing and exposing process, the WX5 has no manual controls, taking away some creativity from its photographic experience.

The Competition
Since the WX5 is a capable low-light performer, it could be compared to the true high-end compacts. The two most popular leaders being Canon's S95 and Panasonic's LX5. Both of which provider a smaller zoom range, but higher image quality overall and especially in low light situations.
Somewhat closer to its performance, size and price point, you find Canon's SD4000 and Panasonic's FX700 with the latter offering the same zoom range and low light support for the same price.
If you like the Sony style (and cool features like the sweep panorama) but prefer a much larger zoom in a slightly larger body, you could consider Sony's own HX5.

Who is it not for?
If you are looking for a large zoom range, this camera is not for you.
If you need a low priced camera, the price of the WX5 might exceed your budget.
If support for RAW format or manual controls over exposure are high on your list, you should look elsewhere.

Who is it for?
If want you want is a slim, feature packed camera, the WX5 is just that.
If you are looking for a good, ultra-compact low-light performer, this could be it.
If you prefer your camera to be mostly automatic, employing smart features to enhance image quality in all situations, the WX5 should be high on your list.
